About Urdu to Chinese (Simplified) Translation

Urdu to Simplified Chinese translation is used by traders, students and travellers who deal with China. Urdu has about 230 million speakers across India and Pakistan and is written right to left in Nastaliq, while Simplified Chinese, used in Mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia, has about 1.1 billion speakers and is written left to right in characters, each with a fixed meaning. Many Urdu-speaking businesspeople from Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Pakistan buy electronics, garments and machinery in Guangzhou and Yiwu, and students go to Chinese universities. The key challenge is tones: Mandarin has four tones, so mā, má, mǎ and mà are four different words. This page gives trade and halal food phrases with Hanyu Pinyin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Simplified Chinese and why does this page use it?
Simplified Chinese uses fewer strokes per character, such as 谢 (xiè), 说 (shuō) and 这 (zhè). It is used in Mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia. Taiwan and Hong Kong use traditional characters. For trade with factories and markets in Guangzhou, Yiwu and Shenzhen, Simplified Chinese is the right choice.
How do I read the Pinyin tone marks?
Pinyin writes Mandarin in Latin letters, and the marks show the tone: ā (high and flat), á (rising), ǎ (dips then rises) and à (falling). So 买 (mǎi, buy) and 卖 (mài, sell) differ only by tone. Say the line aloud slowly and listen for the pitch, as a wrong tone can change the meaning.
Which Chinese word for "you" is used?
It uses the polite 您 (nín), which is right for business partners, officials and elders. The informal 你 (nǐ) is for friends and peers. Urdu has a similar choice between آپ (aap), تم (tum) and تو (tu), and this page uses آپ.
Are there shared words between Urdu and Chinese?
Very few, but there are famous ones. Urdu چائے (chai) comes from Chinese 茶 (chá), and Urdu چینی (cheeni) means both "Chinese" and "sugar", since sugar was long imported from China. Most other vocabulary is completely different, so phrase lists like these help.
Can I use this for halal food in China?
Yes. The Hotel and Halal Food section includes 清真食物 (qīngzhēn shíwù, halal food) and 这里面有猪肉吗? (is there pork in this?). Look for the 清真 sign on restaurants; many Hui and Uyghur noodle shops in Chinese cities carry it. Always ask about ingredients, as stock and oil can also contain pork.
Is Urdu to Chinese translation free?
Yes, it is free, needs no signup and works in any phone or desktop browser.
