Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Unicode (Mangal) and Kruti Dev?
Unicode is the modern standard: every Hindi letter has its own code, so the text shows correctly on any phone, browser or computer. Mangal is a common Unicode Hindi font. Kruti Dev 010 is an older, non-Unicode font that draws Hindi shapes on top of English keyboard letters, so the same text only looks like Hindi when the Kruti Dev font is applied.
Why does the converted text look like English letters?
Kruti Dev text is stored as English keyboard characters. For example, "नमस्ते" becomes "ueLrs". It turns into Hindi only after you set the font to Kruti Dev 010 in your word processor. This is normal and is how every Kruti Dev converter works.
How do I convert Mangal to Kruti Dev?
Mangal is a Unicode font, so Mangal to Kruti Dev is the same conversion as Unicode to Kruti Dev. Copy your text from the Mangal document, paste it in the left box, then copy the output and apply the Kruti Dev 010 font.
Do I need to install the Kruti Dev font?
Yes. To see the converted text as Hindi you need the Kruti Dev 010 font installed on your computer. It comes pre-installed on many office computers in India and is widely available to download. This tool only converts the text; it does not install fonts.
Does it handle half letters, ि and reph (र्)?
Yes. In Kruti Dev the short i matra (ि) is typed before the consonant and the reph (र् above a letter) is typed after it. The converter reorders these automatically, so स्थिति becomes fLFkfr and कार्यक्रम becomes dk;ZØe. Common conjuncts like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र and द्य use their single Kruti Dev keys.
Why is Kruti Dev still used?
Many government offices, courts, printing presses and Hindi typing exams (such as court and clerk typing tests) still use Kruti Dev, because staff learned typing on the Remington layout it is built for. Unicode text often has to be converted before it can be used in those documents.
Is this converter free and private?
Yes. It is free with no signup and no text limit, and the conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.
