How to Type in Urdu Online

Our English to Urdu typing tool converts your English keyboard input into Urdu Nastaliq script (اردو) in real-time using transliteration. Type Urdu words phonetically - for example, "shukriya" becomes "شکریہ" and "namaste" becomes "نمستے". Urdu is written in the Nastaliq style of the Perso-Arabic script and reads from right to left - the opposite direction to English. The tool handles this right-to-left output automatically. Urdu has 38 letters, including several sounds not found in Arabic, such as the retroflex consonants ٹ, ڈ, ڑ and the aspirated sounds. Press Space after each word to confirm, and use arrow keys to choose from suggestions.

Does Urdu text appear right to left?

What are the retroflex consonants in Urdu?
Urdu has retroflex consonants (sounds made with the tongue curled back): ٹ (ṭ - type capital T), ڈ (ḍ - type capital D), and ڑ (ṛ - type capital R). These sounds exist in most South Asian languages but not in Arabic or Persian.
