About English to Chinese Translation

English to Chinese translation here gives you Mandarin, the standard spoken language of mainland China, written in simplified characters. Chinese has about 1.1 billion speakers, and Mandarin is the most spoken first language in the world. Indians use this pair for business trips to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Yiwu, for travel and trade fairs, and for students and professionals who deal with Chinese suppliers. Chinese is written with characters instead of an alphabet, and every syllable carries one of four tones, so the same sound can mean different things. Each phrase here shows simplified characters plus Hanyu Pinyin with tone marks, so you can read it aloud even without knowing a single character.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this page and the Simplified Chinese page?
This page gives everyday Mandarin for travellers, with hotel and restaurant phrases. The characters are simplified in both cases, but the phrase sets are different, so you can use both for more vocabulary.
How do the four tones work?
Mandarin has a high flat tone (mā), a rising tone (má), a dipping tone (mǎ) and a falling tone (mà). Pinyin marks them above the vowel, for example 你好 is Nǐ hǎo, where both syllables dip. Practise by saying each phrase out loud with the tone marks.
Do I need to learn Chinese characters to use these phrases?
No. Read the Pinyin and say the phrase aloud, or show the character line to the person you are speaking with. Pinyin uses the Latin alphabet, so it is easy to read for English speakers, with a few special letters like q (similar to "ch") and x (similar to "sh").
Is there a polite way to say "you" in Chinese?
Yes. 你 (nǐ) is the normal form, and 您 (nín) is respectful, used with elders, officials and customers. A respectful greeting is 您好 (Nín hǎo), which suits elders, officials and customers.
Do Taiwan and Hong Kong use the same characters?
No. Mainland China and Singapore use simplified characters, which this page uses. Taiwan and Hong Kong use traditional characters, and Hong Kong speaks Cantonese in daily life, so spoken phrases can differ there.
Is English to Chinese translation free?
Yes, it is free, needs no signup and works in any phone or desktop browser.
