About Chinese to Tamil Translation

Chinese to Tamil translation helps Mandarin speakers who do business, travel or study in southern India. Chinese, written in Hanzi characters, has over a billion speakers, while Tamil has about 85 million speakers in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. Chinese companies and engineers work around Chennai, Sriperumbudur and Hosur, buyers visit Tirupur and Coimbatore for textiles and machinery, and tourists come for Mahabalipuram and Madurai. The links are old: the Chinese monk Xuanzang visited Kanchipuram in the seventh century. The two languages differ sharply. Chinese is tonal and has no verb endings, while Tamil has no tones, uses a rounded Brahmi-derived script and attaches many suffixes to a word. This page gives Mandarin lines in natural spoken Tamil, with a Roman pronunciation guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How different are Chinese and Tamil writing systems?
Very different. Chinese uses characters like 谢谢 where each character stands for a syllable and meaning, and there is no alphabet. Tamil (தமிழ்) is an alphabet-like script of 12 vowels and 18 consonants, read left to right, so நன்றி (nandri, thank you) is built letter by letter.
Do I need to worry about tones in the Tamil output?
No. Tamil has no tones, so you can speak with a natural rhythm. The main difficulty for Mandarin speakers is the sound ழ (zh), a rolled back-of-the-tongue sound found in the word தமிழ் (Tamizh) itself, and the difference between short and long vowels.
Are the Tamil phrases formal or casual?
They use the polite plural form, such as நீங்கள் (neengal) rather than நீ (nee), which suits business meetings and shop talk. The Chinese side uses the common 你 or 您 meaning you, and Tamil politeness is handled through -ங்கள் (-ngal) endings in verbs.
Is spoken Tamil the same as written Tamil?
Not exactly. Tamil has a clear gap between formal written style and everyday speech. The tool gives natural spoken-style Tamil that people in Chennai or Coimbatore will understand, for example எப்போது (eppodhu, when) in writing may sound like எப்ப (eppa) in fast speech.
Is Chinese here simplified or traditional?
The Chinese source text is written in Simplified characters used in Mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia. Taiwan and Hong Kong use Traditional characters, so the same words may look different there, though the Tamil translation stays the same.
Is Chinese to Tamil translation free?
Yes, it is free, needs no signup and works in any phone or desktop browser.
