About Arabic to Urdu Translation

Arabic to Urdu translation is one of the most practical language pairs in South Asia and the Gulf. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and is widely spoken in India, and it is written in a modified form of the Arabic script. A large share of its formal vocabulary comes from Arabic, often through Persian, so words for knowledge, time, law, faith and everyday courtesy look familiar to readers of both languages. Many Pakistanis work in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, which makes Arabic to Urdu translation a daily need for contracts, notices, medical instructions and government forms. The two languages share a script but not a grammar. Arabic is a Semitic language built on three-letter roots, with a definite article (al-), a dual number and verbs that change for gender and number. Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language with subject-object-verb word order, postpositions instead of prepositions and no definite article. Urdu also adds letters Arabic lacks, such as ٹ, ڈ, ڑ, پ, چ, گ and ں, for sounds that exist in South Asian languages. Arabic text is normally set in Naskh style, while Urdu is traditionally written in the more flowing Nastaliq style. The letters are the same Unicode characters, so the difference you see is in the font. Numerals also differ slightly: Arabic uses ٤ ٥ ٦ while Urdu uses ۴ ۵ ۶, and Arabic text in the Gulf often uses Western digits 0-9 as well. Pronunciation is another reason to translate meaning rather than copy words. Urdu pronounces Arabic loanwords through Persian and South Asian habits, so ث, ذ, ض and ظ are usually said as s or z in Urdu, while Arabic keeps distinct sounds for them. Some shared words also shift in meaning. Arabic مشكلة (mushkila) means a problem, but Urdu مشکل (mushkil) means difficult. Arabic مدرسة (madrasa) is any school, while Urdu مدرسہ usually means a religious school. Arabic عورة (awra) refers to the parts of the body that must be covered, while Urdu عورت (aurat) simply means woman. Arabic كل means every or all, while Urdu کل means both yesterday and tomorrow. A word-for-word swap can therefore produce a wrong or awkward sentence. This tool translates Modern Standard Arabic, the written standard used in news, official documents and signage. Spoken Gulf, Levantine and Egyptian Arabic differ from it in vocabulary and grammar, and the Arabic of the Quran is a classical register that is richer and older than everyday MSA. The tool suits students learning Arabic from Urdu, Pakistani and Indian workers in the Gulf, families reading Arabic messages and travellers. For Quranic verses, religious rulings or legal documents, rely on published translations reviewed by qualified scholars or a certified translator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Arabic to Urdu translation free?
Yes. This Arabic to Urdu translator is free to use, with no signup and no word limit. Paste your Arabic text, choose Urdu as the target language and copy the result.
Is this Arabic to Urdu translator useful for Pakistanis working in the Gulf?
Yes. Many Pakistanis work in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. You can use it to understand work instructions, notices, medical advice, bank messages and official forms, then check anything important with an employer or a certified translator.
Does it translate Gulf, Egyptian or Levantine dialects?
It works best with Modern Standard Arabic, the written standard. Spoken dialects differ in vocabulary and grammar, so a casual chat message may translate less accurately than a formal sentence. Writing the message in simpler standard Arabic gives better results.
Can I use it to understand the Quran?
It can help you grasp the general meaning of Arabic words and simple phrases, but the Quran is written in a classical register and its meanings are studied by scholars. For verses and religious questions, use a published Urdu translation and commentary reviewed by qualified scholars.
Why do some Arabic words look the same in Urdu but mean something different?
Urdu borrowed many Arabic words and then changed their meaning or usage over time. For example, Arabic مشكلة means a problem while Urdu مشکل means difficult, and Arabic عورة and Urdu عورت are quite different in meaning. Translating whole sentences avoids these false friends.
Do Arabic and Urdu use the same script?
Both use the Arabic script and read right to left. Urdu adds extra letters such as ٹ, ڈ, ڑ, پ, چ and گ, and is traditionally written in Nastaliq style, while Arabic usually appears in Naskh. Both are the same Unicode text, so only the font changes.
Why do the numbers look different in Arabic and Urdu?
Arabic uses the digits ٤ ٥ ٦ for 4, 5 and 6, while Urdu uses ۴ ۵ ۶. The other digits look nearly identical. In everyday use both languages also accept Western digits 0-9, which is common on phones and in the Gulf.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes, the page is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets and desktops. If you need to type Urdu from an English keyboard, you can use the English to Urdu typing tool on this site.
