Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bamini font?
Bamini is a popular non-Unicode Tamil font, widely used in Sri Lanka and in older Tamil documents, newspapers and print designs. It draws Tamil letters on top of English keyboard characters, so its text only looks like Tamil when the Bamini font is applied.
Why does the converted text look like English letters?
Bamini text is stored as English keyboard characters. For example, "வணக்கம்" becomes "tzf;fk;". It turns into Tamil once you set the font to Bamini in your software. This is normal for every Bamini converter.
How are ெ, ே, ை, ொ and ோ handled?
In Bamini these vowel signs are typed before the consonant (and ொ, ோ are split around it). The converter reorders them automatically, so கொழும்பு becomes "nfhOk;G" and கோயில் becomes "Nfhapy;".
Do I need to install the Bamini font?
Yes. To see the output as Tamil you need the Bamini font installed. This tool converts the text only; it does not install fonts.
Are Grantha letters like ஜ, ஷ, ஸ, ஹ and ஸ்ரீ supported?
Yes. Grantha letters and ஸ்ரீ are converted to their Bamini keys, including their u and uu forms.
Is this converter free and private?
Yes. It is free with no signup and no text limit, and the conversion runs in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.
