About Russian to English Translation

Russian to English translation links the most widely spoken native language in Europe with the world's main language of international communication. Russian is an official language of Russia and Belarus, is widely used as a second language across Central Asia and the Caucasus, and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It has well over 100 million native speakers, and including second-language speakers the total is commonly estimated at over 250 million. Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, which has 33 letters. Many look like Latin letters but sound different: "Р" is an R sound, "С" is an S sound, "Н" is an N sound and "В" is a V sound. Two letters, the hard sign "ъ" and the soft sign "ь", have no sound of their own and instead change how the neighbouring consonant is pronounced. The letter "ё" is almost always printed as plain "е" in everyday text, so a translator has to rely on context to read some words correctly. Russian grammar is the main challenge for English speakers. Nouns, adjectives and pronouns change their endings across six cases, and nouns have three genders. There are no articles ("a" or "the"), and the verb "to be" is normally left out in the present tense, so "Я студент" literally reads "I student". Verbs also come in pairs of imperfective and perfective aspect. Because the endings carry the grammar, word order is more flexible than in English, and a good Russian to English translator has to work out who did what to whom from those endings. People use Russian to English translation to read news and websites, understand messages and emails, study documents such as certificates and contracts, follow literature by authors like Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Chekhov, and prepare for travel or study. Large Russian-speaking communities live in many countries, so the pair is also common for immigration paperwork, education and everyday communication.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I translate Russian to English?
Type or paste your Russian text into the box above, make sure English is selected as the target language, and the English translation appears instantly. You can type directly in Cyrillic, paste text copied from a website, a messenger or a document, or use a phonetic Russian keyboard if you do not have a Cyrillic layout installed.
Is this Russian to English translator free?
Yes, it is completely free with no signup, no word limits, and no hidden charges.
Can I type Russian in Latin letters (transliteration) and get an English translation?
Russian written in Latin letters, such as "privet, kak dela?", has no single standard spelling, so the same word can be written several ways and results are less reliable than with real Cyrillic. For the most accurate Russian to English translation, use Cyrillic. If you only have transliterated text, keep sentences short and use common spellings.
What is the difference between ты and вы in Russian?
Both words mean "you" in English. "Ты" is informal and used with friends, family, children and peers. "Вы" is formal and also the plural form, used with strangers, older people, colleagues and in business. English has only one "you", so the translation cannot show which one was used, but it affects the tone of the original sentence.
Why does the English translation of Russian sometimes sound unnatural?
Russian leaves out words English needs, such as articles and the present-tense "to be", and uses cases and flexible word order where English relies on word order alone. A word-for-word reading therefore sounds odd. Translating complete sentences gives better results than single words, because the endings and surrounding words show how each word should be understood.
Are the Russian cases and word order handled correctly?
The translator reads the case endings to work out the subject and object of each sentence, so "Мама любит папу" and "Папу любит мама" both translate as "Mom loves Dad". Word order in Russian can change emphasis, and that nuance is not always visible in the English output. For legal, medical or official documents, have a professional translator review the result.
How accurate is Russian to English translation?
Everyday sentences, news and common phrases translate well. Idioms, poetry, slang and long sentences with many nested clauses are harder, because meaning depends on context and tone. Names written in Cyrillic may also come out spelled differently from the form used in official documents, such as a passport.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes, it is fully responsive on all devices, and no app installation is needed.
