About Punjabi to English Translation

Punjabi to English translation connects a language with well over 100 million native speakers to the world's most common language of international communication. Punjabi is the most widely spoken first language in Pakistan, and in India it is the official language of the state of Punjab and one of the 22 scheduled languages of the country. Its speakers also form some of the largest South Asian communities abroad, so people regularly need to turn Punjabi text into English for family, study, work and paperwork. Punjabi is written in two different scripts, and this matters for translation. In Indian Punjab it is written left to right in Gurmukhi, a script standardized in the 16th century by the second Sikh Guru, Guru Angad, and used for the Guru Granth Sahib. In Pakistani Punjab it is written right to left in Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic script closely related to Urdu. The spoken language is the same, but the two scripts are not interchangeable. This page is built for Gurmukhi input, so Shahmukhi text should be translated through the Urdu to English page or converted to Gurmukhi first. Punjabi is one of the few Indo-Aryan languages that uses lexical tone: a word can carry a high, low or level tone that changes its meaning. Gurmukhi does not mark tone with a separate symbol, so the tone has to be inferred from the spelling and context, which is one reason a good Punjabi to English translator reads whole sentences rather than isolated words. Standard Punjabi also shares much everyday grammar with Hindi and Urdu, but its vocabulary and verb forms differ, so a Hindi translator is not a reliable substitute. Diaspora communities have made Punjabi a global language. It is among the most commonly reported mother tongues in Canada and the United Kingdom, with large communities in places such as Brampton, Surrey (British Columbia), Southall and Birmingham. People use Punjabi to English translation to read letters and messages from relatives, understand school and government forms, follow Punjabi songs and films, and read Sikh religious texts alongside their English renderings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I translate Punjabi to English?
Type or paste your Punjabi text in Gurmukhi script into the box above, make sure English is selected as the target language, and the English translation appears instantly. You can paste text copied from a website, WhatsApp or a document, or type it with a phonetic Punjabi keyboard.
Is this Punjabi to English converter free?
Yes, this Punjabi to English converter is completely free, with no signup, no word limits and no hidden charges.
How do I type Gurmukhi to translate it?
You do not need a special keyboard. Use the phonetic typing tool at /english-to-punjabi-typing/ to type Punjabi in Gurmukhi using English letters, then copy the result and paste it here. On a phone you can also add the built-in Punjabi (Gurmukhi) keyboard in your device settings.
Can I translate Shahmukhi (Pakistani Punjabi) text here?
This page expects Gurmukhi, the script used in Indian Punjab. Shahmukhi is written right to left in a Perso-Arabic script similar to Urdu, so for Shahmukhi text try the Urdu to English page, or convert the text to Gurmukhi first.
Can I type Romanized Punjabi (like "tusi kiven ho") and get English?
Romanized Punjabi has no standard spelling, so the same word can be written many ways and results are less reliable than with real Gurmukhi. For the most accurate Punjabi to English translation, use Gurmukhi script. If you only have Roman text, keep sentences short and use common spellings.
Does the translator handle Punjabi tones?
Tone is not written in Gurmukhi, so it is worked out from spelling and context. Everyday sentences translate well because the surrounding words make the meaning clear. A single isolated word with several possible meanings may be translated less reliably than the same word inside a full sentence.
How accurate is Punjabi to English translation?
Common phrases, messages and everyday sentences translate well. Punjabi proverbs, idioms, folk songs and religious or poetic language are harder, because meaning depends on context and tone. For legal, medical, immigration or official documents, have a professional translator review the result.
Is Punjabi the same as Hindi?
No. They are separate languages with a lot of shared everyday vocabulary and similar grammar, and they use different scripts (Gurmukhi for Punjabi, Devanagari for Hindi). Punjabi also has tones that Hindi does not. If you have Hindi text instead, use the Hindi to English page.
