About German to Tamil Translation

German to Tamil translation connects about 135 million German speakers with roughly 85 million Tamil speakers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. German is written in the Latin alphabet with the letters ä, ö, ü and ß, while Tamil uses its own rounded script of 12 vowels and 18 consonants, also left to right. The pair matters for German tourists and volunteers in Pondicherry and Auroville, for Sri Lankan Tamil families in Germany who worship at the Sri Kamadchi Ampal temple in Hamm, and for Tamil engineers who move to Germany for work with firms such as Bosch and Siemens. A key difference is word order: German puts the verb second or last, while Tamil always ends the sentence with the verb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Tamil sound so different from German?
Tamil is a Dravidian language with retroflex sounds like ட and ள, and the special sound ழ (zha), which German does not have. German has sounds like ch and ü that Tamil lacks. Pronunciation notes here use plain letters, so read each syllable slowly.
Does the page use formal German?
Yes. The German side uses Sie, the polite you, as in Wie geht es Ihnen? Among friends Germans use du. Tamil also has a polite நீங்கள் (neengal) and a casual நீ (nee), and this page uses the polite form.
How is Tamil written and can I read the script?
Tamil has consonants with attached vowel signs, for example க + ா = கா (kaa). Unlike German, letters do not change between capital and small forms. Start with the romanization shown under each phrase, such as Nandri for நன்றி, and match it to the script slowly.
Which phrases help at a Tamil temple?
The Temple and Festival Words section covers கோயில் (koyil), removing shoes, flowers, incense and asking permission for photos. Many temples do not allow photos inside the sanctum, so ask first with புகைப்படம் எடுக்கலாமா? before using a camera.
Are there shared words between German and Tamil?
Almost none are inherited, but modern loanwords from English appear in both, such as டாக்சி (taxi), பஸ் (bus) and ரயில் (rayil), train, which Germans know as Zug or Bahn. Tamil often combines a borrowed word with a native one, as in ரயில் நிலையம் (train station).
Is German to Tamil translation free?
Yes, it is free, needs no signup and works in any phone or desktop browser.
